A large, rapidly growing software development organization needed
to capture how they developed their products. They had successfully
delivered leading edge software while growing exponentially
because they had retained their key resources for an extraordinary
length of time. With over 600 developers and a voracious market,
they needed to streamline their processes to reduce bugs, speed
time to market, and improve shareholder value. |
Solution:
Assess the scope of the effort. Assess current sources of information.
Meet with key subject matter experts from each area to detail
how they currently work. Begin to transfer process mapping skills
to the organization: that they can continue the process. Prepare
a picture of current processes as a foundation for future process
re-engineering.

A large multinational needed to standardize how they processed
IT system plans and documentation. |
Solution:
Deliver a business writing course to each key IT group and then
develop writing templates for each type of documentation during
those workshops. With coaching, IT staff developed documentation
standards and practices appropriate to their work environment.

Knowledge
Found and Managed.
A rapidly growing software company was unable to support its
customers because staff did not understand the new products
well enough to answer questions properly. There was no formal
training. Sales people were constantly frustrated by the poor
service to their customers. |
Solution:
Assess the current sources of information: tacit and explicit.
Map the information needs of the company. Find the information:
printed, in someone’s head, etc. Structure the information,
capture it, and then make it accessible through an intranet.

Knowledge
Shared and Measured.
A large enterprise needed to train 1500 users in five new desktop
tools with a budget of under 75K. They also needed to reduce
travel time for the implementation team who also acted as trainers. |
Solution:
Implement just-in-time web-based training through a learning
service provider that allows for the administration of all students
and tracking of their results. |
